Nursing home cases involve patients who are unable to care for themselves. Both Illinois law as well as Federal Regulations place strict requirements on all Illinois Nursing Homes.
Many nursing home residents are too ill to be taken care of without constant supervision. Patients suffer from Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and other ailments which require close monitoring and specialized care. In the United States, we have more than 1.5 million nursing home residents averaging in age from 65 years and older, 70% of which are female. In Illinois, the number of patients in nursing homes is approximately 76,065. Congress has found that there are 17,000 licensed nursing homes in America and a reported 30 % percent of them were cited for an abuse violation.
Medicare statistics claim that on average a patient received ½ an hour of care per day from a registered nurse with an additional 38 minutes from a licensed practical nurse, and lastly 2 hours and 18 minutes from a nurse’s aide. Many of these patients require care in some of the most basic of activities of living such as feeding, bathing, dressing, moving and walking. Growing concern has arisen from state and federal care systems on the focused quality of care that nursing home patients receive. Cases of abused, neglected, or inadequately monitored patients have given rise to the more recent scrutiny.
Examples of patient abuse are as follows:
